30 minute emergency Abstract


While working for a new paper some people try and get the abstract section at the very end, some do it at the beginning of the writing process. This varies from person to person. If someday supervising professor drops by the lab or drops a message down for an abstract to be submitted in the evening. One can understand the turmoil considering what you already have on your plate for the day.
I was looking for "best practices for an abstract". That is where I saw "How to Write an Abstract" by Philip Koopman, Carnegie Mellon University. Although written almost two decades ago, still holds a promising set of guidelines for writing a nice abstract.The checklist taken from his website jots down the main ingredients.

Checklist: Parts of an Abstract

Despite the fact that an abstract is quite brief, it must do almost as much work as the multi-page paper that follows it. In a computer architecture paper, this means that it should in most cases include the following sections. Each section is typically a single sentence, although there is room for creativity. In particular, the parts may be merged or spread among a set of sentences. Use the following as a checklist for your next abstract:
  • Motivation:
    Why do we care about the problem and the results? If the problem isn't obviously "interesting" it might be better to put motivation first; but if your work is incremental progress on a problem that is widely recognized as important, then it is probably better to put the problem statement first to indicate which piece of the larger problem you are breaking off to work on. This section should include the importance of your work, the difficulty of the area, and the impact it might have if successful.
  • Problem statement:
    What problem are you trying to solve? What is the scope of your work (a generalized approach, or for a specific situation)? Be careful not to use too much jargon. In some cases it is appropriate to put the problem statement before the motivation, but usually this only works if most readers already understand why the problem is important.
  • Approach:
    How did you go about solving or making progress on the problem? Did you use simulation, analytic models, prototype construction, or analysis of field data for an actual product? What was the extent of your work (did you look at one application program or a hundred programs in twenty different programming languages?) What important variables did you control, ignore, or measure?
  • Results:
    What's the answer? Specifically, most good computer architecture papers conclude that something is so many percent faster, cheaper, smaller, or otherwise better than something else. Put the result there, in numbers. Avoid vague, hand-waving results such as "very", "small", or "significant." If you must be vague, you are only given license to do so when you can talk about orders-of-magnitude improvement. There is a tension here in that you should not provide numbers that can be easily misinterpreted, but on the other hand you don't have room for all the caveats.
  • Conclusions:
    What are the implications of your answer? Is it going to change the world (unlikely), be a significant "win", be a nice hack, or simply serve as a road sign indicating that this path is a waste of time (all of the previous results are useful). Are your results general, potentially generalizable, or specific to a particular case?

10 Software Tools that have helped my PhD

 Ever since I started my research I have been into tech gadgets so that I could do things better and sometimes differently than others. Here are a few of the tools I have been using during my PhD

MS One Note

It is worth everything to have your research organized. I often see evernote buzzed across blogs but I find One note serve my purpose just fine without paying extra penny (PAYING EXTRA is always student nightmare). I have organized my stuff on a month to month basis. with each page section for a particular assignment and role. It can keep me off the headache of opening multiple word excel or visio files to see what I have been doing.
Besides I can locate any information any time.

MS Word

Whenever I write a manuscript I write main structure and scribble in Onenote. Afterwards I can easily export it and do the final touches for a presentable manuscript.

MS PowerPoint

All research requires presenting ideas and themes in the tribe.  MS powerpoint has served me well.

Origin

The data taken in most formats can be analyzed and made presentable using a good analysis software. Origin conforms well with excel and most data types I have encountered so far. So bravo ORIGIN.

G mail the Mailbox

Reliable or not reliable since i made my account after invite from a friend I moved to google and never let go.

Backup/share/DROPBOX

Mostly gmail gives enough space to share files and I use Google drive as well. However Dropbox has been the prime for fast syncing of my mendeley library and other characterization files to avoid any disaster.

Web browser

It has all the addons I ever needed. I am happy with it as it provides multitude of options when I am accessing papers and other stuff. bulk downloading, ad blocking  and many other features have me hooked with firefox for a long time

Mendeley & Citavi

Search journals and topics through scholar Google and import via Citavi. Auto import pdf to Mendeley.

Google calender with Any.Do

 keep track of what you need to do and what part is can be taken care of latter on

 All the videos and photos, not to forget the audio recording of lectures is done by my smart phone. Accessing everything via my lovely GS III

Advanced materials just published the top 10 most cited articles from 2012. 
The eye catching but a lot less cited sits right at the bottom, at number 10,  Graphene-Based Electrodes. 
The authors discuss the graphene based electrodes studied in recent past and review the existing and project the future devices that can be fabricated by the advancements and research in this goldmine-area. The improvement in solar cells and stability studies are the major field of study in energy thirsty civilization as ours in the light of depleting mineral resource. 
The most cited article by Jinhua Ye cited over 400 times and counting, studies the nanophotocatalytic materials, for bunch of possibilities amid challenges.

Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, tells the story of 15 billion years of cosmic history like no one else can. This book shows how broad and deep Carl’s interests extend and draws the reader into a world of fascination. Although the book is primarily about how science has developed in our society, the book touches on subjects such as history, philosophy, religion, and cultures. The book is written in simple terms and is understandable to those without a background in science.

2. Outliers: The Story Of Success – Malcolm Gladwell


Outliers brings a crucial point that there is logic behind why some people become successful, and it has more to do with legacy and opportunity than high IQ. This important idea, shifts the concept of the smarter the better to point out what actually goes into making a successful person. Although Malcolm Gladwells methods have been brought into questioning in recent times, there’s no doubt that this book is a great starting point for anyone interested in evolutionary psychology.

3. A Short History Of Nearly Everything – Bill Bryson


This is the greatest guide, to what we all should have learned in high school and beyond. Through one giant narrative, Bill Bryson takes the reader to the many physical quarks and wonders of our universe. As far as science books go, this one is a must read for anyone interested in how and why we are here.

Where do morals come from? Why do we do certain things?
These are the questions the book challenges from a new perspective. Taking the basic principle of evolution and finally applying it to the way we act as humans.

5. Thinking Fast And Slow – Daniel Kahneman


Daniel Kahneman presents the brain as we have never seen it. The basis of the book is simple. In judging the world around us, we use two mental systems: Fast and Slow. The Fast system (System 1) is mostly unconscious and makes snap judgments based on our past experiences and emotions. When we use this system we are as likely to be wrong as right. The Slow system (System 2) is rational, conscious and slow. They work together to give us a view of the world around us.

6. Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything – Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner


The lesson of this book is that we should be leery of trusting society’s or common wisdom. In other words, the book encourages us to keep our mind alert and break out of the mold in the way we see things. It introduces one of the most important topics which is differentiating correlation from causation.

7. The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business


This is a great book about the power of habit and what we can do to change our habits in business, life, and society. The book is divided into three sections, first focusing on the individual, then companies, and finally societies.

8. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates Of Human Societies – Jared Diamond


Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Guns, Germs, and Steel is a brilliant work answering the question of why the people’s of certain continents succeeded in invading other continents and conquering or displacing their people’s. This book sheds light on why the Europeans advanced so much quicker than the rest of the world.

9. Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics Explained by Its Most Brilliant Teacher – Richard P. Feynman


Physics can often be wrongly marred with hatred for its complexity and day to day social application.
